How I Built Four Mobile Apps with Claude Code

I wrote Building Mobile Apps with Claude Code in 2026 because I kept running into the same problem: people with good app ideas were being told to learn months of programming before they could build anything real.

That advice makes sense if the goal is to become a traditional developer. It makes less sense if the goal is to ship a focused product, learn by building, and use AI as a development partner.

The book documents the workflow I used to go from no serious mobile development background to building four real apps with Claude Code, Expo, React Native, Supabase, Anthropic Vision API, and EAS.

The shift: build first, learn through the build

The old path was usually:

  1. learn JavaScript
  2. learn React
  3. learn React Native
  4. learn mobile builds
  5. learn backend services
  6. eventually try to build the app you actually cared about

That path loses a lot of founders and product-minded builders before they ever reach the interesting part.

The workflow in the book starts differently. You set up a small environment, describe what you want, let Claude Code build the first version, then test on a real device and iterate. The learning still happens, but it happens around a working product instead of abstract tutorials.

The stack

The stack is intentionally practical:

  • Claude Code as the AI development partner.
  • Expo for the managed React Native workflow.
  • AsyncStorage for the first local app.
  • Supabase for authentication, database, and secure backend work.
  • Anthropic Vision API for image-based AI features.
  • Supabase Edge Functions to protect API keys.
  • EAS for App Store and Google Play builds.

The point is not that this is the only stack. The point is that it is a stack a non-traditional builder can actually use to ship.

The four projects

The book walks through four complete builds.

The first is a local habit tracker. It teaches the basic loop: describe the screen, build the feature, run it on your phone, fix what is wrong, and repeat.

The second is a cloud-connected habit tracker with Supabase authentication and sync. This is where the app starts feeling like software someone could use across devices.

The third is an AI calorie tracker that takes a food photo and returns structured nutrition data. This introduces camera flows, image handling, and AI output parsing.

The fourth is the production-ready version: the same AI calorie tracker, but with API keys protected behind a Supabase Edge Function instead of being exposed inside the mobile app.

That last step matters. A lot of beginner AI app tutorials skip security. I wanted the book to teach the safer pattern from day one.

The testing loop

The workflow depends on testing constantly.

I use a three-stage testing protocol:

  • computer preview
  • mirrored screen
  • physical phone

The physical phone is important because mobile layouts can look fine on a simulator and still feel wrong in your hand. Buttons may be too small, spacing may feel off, camera permissions may behave differently, and gestures need to feel natural.

For AI-assisted development, testing is also how you stay in control. Claude Code can generate a lot quickly, but the builder still needs to inspect, decide, and steer.

What Claude Code is good at

Claude Code is especially useful when the task has structure:

  • creating screens
  • wiring navigation
  • connecting Supabase
  • shaping JSON responses
  • refactoring repeated code
  • fixing errors from logs
  • adding build configuration

It is not magic. The quality of the output depends heavily on the quality of the instruction. The builder's job becomes writing clear specs, testing carefully, and keeping the product small enough to understand.

That is why the book spends so much time on the workflow, not just the tools.
